Francois Dubeau

My current work is borne of a fascination with the unbridled creative energy and movement which is often found primarily in a sketch. It is also a fascination for how observers see such work, how they must dig within their own subjectivity to "fill in the blanks".

To capture that uncensored gesture, I use the naked line. Every other element has been discarded, even color. All that is left are black lines on that most elemental of supports, paper. To better involve the viewer, I leave a lot of open space, of ambiguity, in my drawings. Each one of my drawings suggest a balance between the visible and the invisible, the defined and the undefined, black and white, l'avoue' et l'inavouable. I am a graphic artist and have been working with pen and ink for some 25 years. I have been working with a digital graphic tablet for five years. I am essentially self-taught.
