After spending years as an amateur photographer, I have developed a love for how light interacts with the subjects I am photographing. In particular, I am attracted to the high contrasts created between light and dark shapes. In the art world, this relationship is known as eValuei. Value is my choice of a dominant design element in many of my paintings and drawings. I am also moved by the colors and abstract designs that light and shadow create.
When I paint a portrait from life, I look for that special moment when a subject is in contact with either their inner thoughts or focused on an external event. Or, when drawing the figure, I look for high impact lighting and shadows that define the contours of the body in a dramatic way.
Joseph was raised in the Pacific Northwest and, as an engineering graduate of the University of Washington, has worked as a computer network design engineer in the Pacific Northwest for many years. |
