David Varnau
Lynnwood WA

David Varnau's words in his 'Artist Statement' indicate his love of sculpture and his total involvement.

"Figurative and portrait sculpture can call forth an essential part of us that resonates with the truth captured therein. I believe that good sculpture draws us in by its visual interest through its lines, planes and contours - the beauty of its three dimensionality. Yet, great sculpture also evokes in us something deeper, an emotional truth found in the sculptural work that, while unique, expresses an accuracy that is both universal and timeless. In my portraits, I seek to render not only an accurate visual image of the person it portrays but also a sense of their uniqueness - those singular qualities that gaze out at us as we encounter them. In my figurative sculpture, I am fascinated with the planes of the human body as they bend to create the powerful language of gesture and the yearning that lies within."

David studied under John Sisko, Viktor Sirotin, Boris Spivak and Matt Buckner at the Gage Academy in Seattle, formerly the 'Seattle Academy of Fine Arts'. His work has been recognised with First Place for Sculpture in 2001, 2002 and 2004 at the Annual Student Art Exhibit and a First Place and Honorable Mention from the Edmonds Arts Festival juried selections.

His work has been exhibited at a number of Juried Shows including 'Unclad' in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and now 2007.
