I've been doing figure drawing from live models since my fine arts studies at the University of Colorado. There I earned a BFA in painting and drawing in 1971.
Once past the initial shock that a person was willing to pose naked before my curious eyes, I took on the challenge of representing their humanity. I focused on rendering accurate and expressive proportions, and was able to understand why this exercise is a staple of art education and basis of painting throughout art history.
I try to keep in practice especially when my career as an illustrator is slow or lacking in creative projects. When I discovered watercolors and used them in life drawing without any preliminary sketch, I discovered a whole new look and approach that I've yet to see elsewhere. There emerged a beauty and subtlety of the figure that I could never plan and hope I never lose.
