Thu Nguyen
Cabot AR
Thu Nguyen was born in Saigon, Vietnam. Being very shy, she spent much of her childhood upstairs making quilts, doll clothes and painting instead of playing with other children. Her painting won "Best of Show" prize at a 1974 children's exhibition in Saigon sponsored by UNICEF. In 1975, Thu's family was split up. She ended up in a Hong Kong refugee camp for a year prior to immigrating to the United States (Indian Town Gap refugee camp in Pennsylvania). After one very snowy and cold winter in Pennsylvania, the artist moved to Los Angeles. Since then, Thu has lived and worked in the Seattle area and recently moved to Cabot, Arkansas.
Thu Nguyen earned her A.A. in painting from Los Angeles Valley College in 1990 and went on to receive a B.F.A. in painting from California State University - Long Beach,CA. in 1993.
Her first exhibition was 'A New Generation: Contemporary Vietnamese American Art' at California State University Fullerton's main gallery, that was in 1994. Now, after twelve years Thu's work has been seen and appreciated not only across the United States but also in Toronto and Quebec in Canada and in Germany's capital, Berlin. She has shown in numerous one-man shows, juried exhibitions and "too many shows to count" and has earned numerous awards.
In addition to her painting abilities, Thu has also filled the role of Guest Lecturer at a number of events and has received grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation in Montreal, Canada and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in New York. Her work hangs in over fifty 'Private Collections' from Washinton to Washington , DC, from California to Maryland and Hawaii to New Jersey. The Public Collections that own and exhibit her paintings include companies in Florida, California and Vietnam.
