Duane Simshauser
Camano Island WA
My work for the last few years has featured large acrylic paintings with a collage technique. I apply paint in many ways. I attach paper and other materials to the canvas. Sometimes, I shape the canvas, or hang it without stretchers from a branch. I do assemblages of bone, wood, canvas and metal.
My subject matter has been landscapes, people, birds, horses and other animals. As I work, the subject matter becomes less important than the colors, textures, patterns and the feeling of the piece. If I begin with no subject matter, then I get into those areas right away and the painting is freed from being anything but a painting.
I try to be inventive but of course, I get the ideas from everywhere. The landscapes, ravens, crows and hawks of my travels inspire me as does the jazz that I listen to while I work. |
