Henry Yuen
Clackamas OR
Henry is a self-taught figure artist with a variety of art ranging from watercolor to silkscreen prints and stenciled prints. His art depicts everyday people doing ordinary things at work and at play. His recent subjects are a group of naturists in Oregon at clothes-optional beaches, hot springs and nudist resorts.
I find the nudist or naturist attitude toward the human body very refreshing. Besides not associating nudity with sex, they tend to accept themselves and others regardless of size, shape, color, or age.
All of Henry's designs are from sketches made on location where he tries to capture that diversity in his art. 'I think it is very refreshing to see a group of nude men and women treating each other as equals and working together like being nude is perfectly natural. That is the inspiration of my art.'
In 2000, Henry put on a two-person show with Knud Odde titled Naturisme a way of living. He has received many awards for his work including the Jurors Choice Award for Switching fuel tanker in the 1992 Alaska Watercolor Show, and Honorable mentions for Salmon tender in 1989 and Kelping in Metervik Bay in 1993. Over the years, Henrys work has been published in Nude and Natural Magazine.
